202 Unusual Monuments in the United States
Today's site from Atlas Obscura offers their splendid round-up monument
oddities scattered around America. Gentle Subscribers looking for a break from
their usual views will enjoy this off beat, yet surprisingly engaging,
collection of uncommon monuments.
"Discover 202 unusual monuments in the United States." - from the website
This superbly done presentation features its 202 items in a simple visual
format with only a line of text noting the title and the location with three
user optional boxes. Clicking on a photo, however, brings up a separate
webpage, replete with photos and rich in details about the monument. Among the
items in the collection are the bizarre, such as the World's Largest Killer Bee
in Hidalgo, Texas; the Second Largest Roadrunner, Paisano Pete in Fort
Stockton, Texas; and the Memorial to America's First Circus Elephant in
Heritage Hills, New York. On the more serious side can be found the grave site
of Shep, the unofficial mascot of the Broomfield Turnpike, Colorado; The
Sphere, the sculpture which survived the 9/11 attacks, Manhattan, New York; and
the statuary at Haymarket Square, Chicago, Illinois, commemorating a protest
movement, a bombing, and labor history.
