10 Breakthrough Technologies - MIT
Today's site offers that perennial favorite from MIT but this year, the editors
of Technology Review have added a twist. Instead of the usual straightforward
annotated list selected by the editors, Gentle Subscribers will find that a
notable figure in the tech field has been asked to perform the honors as well
as contributing his thoughts on the theme.
"I was honored when MIT Technology Review invited me to be the first guest
curator of its 10 Breakthrough Technologies. Narrowing down the list was
difficult. I wanted to choose things that not only will create headlines in
2019 but captured this moment in technological history -- which got me thinking
about how innovation has evolved over time." - from the website
The always exciting Breakthrough Technologies list has not suffered under the
hands of this year's curator. The virtually heart-stopping possibilities which
grace these technologies include a simple, inexpensive procedure to predict
premature babies with a timeline of roughly 5 years, nuclear fusion and fission
reactors which are moving away from science fiction and edging closer to
reality, and smart watches with the ability to monitor the heart -- a mobile
electrocardiogram in effect -- are within reach of a near horizon. Dramatic
developments in robotics and Artificial Intelligence are also among the leaders
in this year's list.
