10 Breakthrough Technologies 2020 MIT
Today's site offers the always eagerly anticipated Breakthrough list from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's MIT Technology Review journal. Gentle
Subscribers will find 10 scientific discoveries which tend to indicate they
could have a significant impact on the lives of ordinary people.
"Here is our annual list of technological advances that we believe will make a
real difference in solving important problems. How do we pick? We avoid the
one-off tricks, the overhyped new gadgets. Instead we look for those
breakthroughs that will truly change how we live and work." - from the website
Along with a snappy graphic for each of the 10 breakthroughs on the list, the
presentation provides a brief statement on Why It Matters, the Key Players, and
a timeframe for Availability. The Players range from vast commercial
enterprises and smaller innovative ones, to governments from around the world,
to university research labs, while the Availability timeframe can span between
5 and 10 years to right now. Advances in the realm of Artificial Intelligence,
Quantum Computing, and a continuum of Anti-Aging Drugs are among the prominent
research efforts which appear to hold out the most potential. The lists of
previous breakthroughs are readily available at the site; curious visitors can
review the scientific events which made the 2003 Breakthrough List, for
example, to see if they fulfilled their early promise.
