Hi SOPVID FRATERNITY,
FIRST LET ME THANK Mute for this very important information.
I have never used this library except once when I had visited Mute.
To me an audio library is a very important source of knowledge and
entertainment just as a normal braille or print one.
Such rare sources need to be preserved for the current and future
generations.
According to me, this library is facing three major problems which. Need to
be addressed:
1. The problem of management. May be I should appeal to those of us in
Nairobi and its environs to volunteer to serve in this library during their
free time. Many of us may take this as a waste of their time; but
bolunteering services these day forms an important part of a CV. The fact
the interviewing pannel can establish that you volunteered to do something
to a group of people or community, you earn credit for this. Therefore I
appeal for volunteers.
2. The issue of technology and audio cassette player. Well, I know tapes
have been overtaken by CDS, DVDS, VCDS and the internet but I think there
are still a few cassette players around. The other way which may be
expensive is to get some one to convert them to Audio CDS to make them more
accessible.
3. Last but not the least is may be ownership of the facility.
May be here Mute can inform us whether the audio books are safe where they
are or not.
4. I was also thinking of may be soliciting funds from NCPWD for its
renovation, upgrade and management.
I hope to hear from others too.

Cheers,
Juma.

Hello SOPVID colleagues
Some of you may over the years have gained both pleasure and knowledge
from audiobooks borrowed from the library housed at Kenya Society for
the Blind.
I am writing to ask all of us whether there is anything we might do to
save the library. In recent times, most members have stopped borrowing
from that library because the bulk of its books are on cassettes which
clearly is a dying technology. At the same time, the volunteers who
manage the library have gradually become fewer and fewer and very soon
that volunteer service too may come to an end.
The question I ask is: should we simply leave this service to die or
is there something we can do about it?
Thank you.
