In a game of conflicting styles reminiscent of the 80's when the fast break
Lakers would battle the low post Celtics, the bigger Gold team came away with a
104-98 victory over the fast-breaking Kawhi-less Kota's. Dakota had the fast
break on all 48 minutes while GRG only used it for 8 minutes. The game
featured 18 lead changes. DAK led 22-18 when LaVine went out for a rest with
3:30 to play. GRG seized the opportunity to go on a 11-4 run to close Q1 ahead
29-26. While Lavine stayed sitting, GRG scored the first 7 points of Q2 to
open the largest lead of the game at 36-24. DAK used 4 FB baskets to help
produce a 18-3 spurt to regain the lead 42-39. The rest of the quarter was
back and forth until the last minute when Green's put-back and a Siakam basket
put GRG up at the half 53-52.
GRG would open back up a 7 point lead 69-62 which DAK wiped out with a 6 point
run. Beverly scored on a put-back to end Q3 tied up 74-74. Randle scored 7
straight to lead GRG to a 84-79 lead which DAK quickly offset with a LaVine 3,
a McConnell FB and a LaVine penetration. With 4:46 to play, the game was again
tied at 92. Randle hit 2 FT and an outside jumper followed by a LaVine 3 pt to
give GRG a 96-95 lead with 3:12 to play. Both teams missed a couple shots
until Randle drove past Poeltl for a dunk and then Lowry penetrated for a
lay-up to open a 100-95 lead with 1:30 to play. The D were stingy over the
next 3 possessions. As time was winding down and the score still 100-95,
McConnell had to foul Kendrich Williams with 0:26 to play. Williams calmly
sank them both to build a safe 7 point lead. LaVine made a 3 but Siakam made 2
more FTs with :02 on the clock for a final score of 104-98 in front of an
enthusiastic Gold crowd.
Randle led the Gold with 26 points but had 5 turnovers. Lowry had 22 points
going 8-10 from the field and 5-5 from the line. Siakam chipped in with 18 and
Williams 11. LaVine led all scorers with 32 points even though he was
double-teamed most of the game. He was supported by 13 from each of Smart,
Williams and Beverly. DAK netted 26 fast break points to just 6 by GRG. This
was offset by GRG leading in the paint 30-16 and making 7 more FTs.
