Hello Gordon,
We will not start drafting (dispersal and rookie drafts) nor allow trading
until after the computer basketball game is available for download. I used
those dates in the timeline as a general timeline that I expect (hope) the game
will release. With these late end to the seasons by the NBA the past two
seasons it has been difficult to nail down a start date for our season.
.Hopefully though when the NBA gets back to normal we will get back to more of
a consistent schedule in the future.
The Rating Guide is not necessary to be competitive in basketball leagues. It
is helpful though for those new to basketball leagues or the basketball game as
the guide helps you evaluate players through the Total Card Values which are
included with the Rating Guide and ranks a player’s “value” per 48 minutes. The
Rating Guide lists the ratings from each player card. It also adds up the
chances to score position (X + F(2) + X+F(1)) and open shots (X + O + F(2) +
X+F(1)) on the shot columns. It also gives you points per passing (PPP) to help
evaluate a player’s halfcourt and fastbreak passing columns (dazzlers = 2
points, open and fastbreak passes = 1.2 points, position shot pass = 1 point,
and steals/turnovers = 0). While any of us can add up the ratings ourselves,
it certainly saves time to have a product that does it for you.
After getting bounced out of the SOMIBA playoffs in early rounds in back to
back seasons (Rick was one of those opponents), I stumbled onto Dave Little’s
articles and his rating system (see his articles here
<http://stratometrics.com/> ). After using them privately to draft players and
make trades I immediately won titles in SOMIBA. During that time I started
studying the action deck and assigning my own values to the ratings on a
player’s card and eventually developed my own rating system, what I call the
Total Card Values (TCV). After seeing the results of using the Little Ratings
and afterwards the TCV’s and with my priority changing from winning leagues to
teaching others, I decided to make the TCV’s available to the basketball
community. It was difficult to gain acceptance until after Strat-O-Matic gave
permission to produce the Rating Guide and combine it along with the TCV’s.
A good part of the proceeds from sales is used to pay for web hosting for SOM
Hoops (www.somhoops.com) which I am working to rebuilding after losing the
entire site after changing web hosting providers. Since I purchase a good plan
with space and bandwidth, I am also able to host the website for three leagues
(APBA, Classic80, and SOMIBA) and plan to help add a fourth later this fall.
This year I am releasing the Rating Guide in Excel format as opposed to the
protected PDF format that it was released in the past. Also, there is an
example of the Rating Guide and Total Card values that you will find at
Stratomtrics.com. Check them out!
Jason.

We already completed testing for the Basketball game, so my guess is it will be
out sooner than 11/1. I think that date was just an estimate Strat put up
several months ago to give everyone an idea of when it would be out, but it's
not a hard date. That being said, the ratings guide Jason sells is really nice.
You do have to pay for it, but it's not too expensive and it has a lot of data
in it that is very helpful even after you buy the game. And it's available now
(so you get to see the ratings in advance and can begin your draft preparation
now)... as opposed to waiting for the game which could still be another week or
so... and it is delivered in electronic format, as a PDF file.

Hi Jason: I do not know anything about the rating guide. It looks like the
SOM game is not released until 11/1 and the draft is all before that. Do I
need the rating guide to have a shot at drafting the right players for a
successful team? In the SOM Hockey league I am in, the draft started about a
week after the SOM game was released, so I was able to export all the player
ratings and prepare that way. It seems like in basketball I’d need the ratings
guide. Is there a cost to it? Is it electronic? I think I need to order one.
Thanks.

Subject: [somiba] 2020-21 Rating Guide
Hey guys,
Just wanted to let those of you interested in the 2020-21 Rating Guide know
that I plan to go live on October 1 by start sending out orders as I receive
them, and I have already received several. If you are interested in the guide
keep in mind that the earlier you get your order in the sooner I will be able
to get it out to you. For those of you unfamiliar with the guide, I should have
samples posted on the website. The Rating Guide contains a preview of the
player ratings and includes shot column calculations and passing column
calculations that you can use to compare the halfcourt and fastbreak passing
columns. The 2020-21 guide also includes the Total Card Values which is an
attempt to provide the value of a player’s card per 48 minutes by assigning
value to each rating on their card. Since the ratings are referenced
differently at each of the 5 positions, the values are listed for each position
from 1 on down. To compare the compare players at different positions, you can
use the Z-Score for each player. The TCV’s can also be used to compare the
strength of one roster against another and I have used it in the Classic80 for
several years now to predict the final league standings and it has done a good
job. The guide will also include Top 50 (or so) at each category. A great tool
to help you with your draft prep since we are having such a large draft this
season!
