Hi All,
A Contest summary is attached below. 1st place (yours truly), 2nd place (Mike
Sherlaw) and 3rd place (Otakar Koprnicky) all flew 6 rounds and had relatively
close flight-scores. 1st and 2nd place rankings would have been reversed, were
it not for the contribution of landing-scores. Lyle Jeakins, and Jack Linghorne
flew fewer rounds.
Strong winds were certainly a factor in today's contest, but even so there was
sporadic lift to be had. High swirling wispy clouds would appear upwind,
advancing towards us at the prevailing windspeed. Suddenly the wind at ground
level would stop blowing. Where did that wind go? Well, evidently it was being
sucked backwards and upwards by that wispy cloud. If your airplane happened to
be in the right part of the sky, you could get a good flight for a few minutes.
But once the cloud passed by, the wind at ground level would resume with
increased vigour. Any lift was now downwind from our field. If you followed the
lift downwind, you risked not being able to get back to the field. Wind gusts
also played havoc with landings.
It was great to see Jack and Margaret Linghorne today. I'd also like to thank
Chef Lyle Jeakins for manning the bar-b-que. Andy Meysner, Ann Tekatch, Dick
Colley and Terry Dawson were on hand to help with set-up and tear-down, and
acted as our timers. Ann has built a beautiful new ALES model which she wisely
chose not to fly for the first time in the less-than-tranquil weather
conditions that prevailed. We look forward to seeing it fly when conditions are
better.
