Some of you might like to know that the USGA has taken a position on how
par is assigned (see the attached document). The guidance is to make all of
the teeing areas for a hole (and for a specific gender) the same. For
example, Black, Blue, Green, White, and Red tees would all be a par 3 for
men on a given hole. The USGA includes examples of when this might not be
appropriate. I have exchanged emails with the SCGA Director of Course
Rating, and his crew is beginning to follow the USGA guidance.
As an example, consider hole #6 on Maderas:
Men: Black/350; Maderas/333; Blue/333; White/308; Green/288; Red/143. All
Par 4.
Women: White/308; Green/288; Red/143. All Par 3.
This happens because the men usually play from the white tees and women
usually play from the red tees. So, all tees on this hole are par 4 for men
and par 3 for women, even though the white tee distance of 308 would not
normally be played as a one-shot to the green hole for women. The next time
the SCGA rates this hole, they might use some of the USGA guidance to make
the white and green tees par 4's for women and the red tee par 3 for men.
