Thanks Ian and Sam, looks like I have set the phone up correctly, just
needed clarification.
I did read the NFC section in the manual but was wondering if I needed to
use it to make a connection between the phone and home wifi. Obviously not
so am glad I asked the question anyway.

Hi Rhonda,
If you have connected the phone to Wifi, it will automatically use it when
in range. However, do make sure that Turbo Download is turned off in your
settings, which will also use your data. It is disabled by default I
believe.
Nfc stands for near field communication, and this is used in the mainstream
for a variety of purposes, including unlocking doors or performing
shortcuts.
A general search for NFC will yield more information.
