Just a further clarification to the below, which I posted yesterday.
Where I referred to pressing Enter on the option for file transfers to
try to turn it on etc, I meant/should have said the OK key (ie the
centre of the navigation pad on the phone). Sorry for any confusion.
Also, regarding the download of BRLTTY - ie the brltty-latest.apk file,
this was from:
http://brltty.com/download.html
(I went to the heading "Android" and from there, the link for
downloading the brltty-latest.apk file.)

Hi Sam/list,
Further to the saga with BrailleBack navigation, I downloaded the latest
brltty-latest.apk file from the BrLTTY site, after my research indicated
it could be an alternative to BrailleBack. I plugged the phone into my
computer, but again, I down arrow to file transfers (which is off), and
yet I can't turn it on even after pressing Enter on it, nor can I turn
the USB charging off. Pressing Enter on either of those just gets rid of
the options and the phone reverts back to the items it was
displaying/speaking on the homescreen etc.
