I managed to set myself an account up on cheeseburger.social. It works
with firefox since that's how I ended up setting the account up. When I
run toot login the authorization code I'm sent won't work in toot.
So for anyone starting out and wanting to use toot to connect to mastodon,
first find a server you may like.
Next, you'll have to use firefox to connect to that server and read the
required reading.
Do not create an account. Then run toot on your local system and enter
your chosen server's name.
If you can authorize that way the authorization codes will be something
like two lines of code quit out of the browser and enter the authorization
code. If that succeeds go back into your server and finish setting up
your account.
Next an email will come with confirmation instructions where you can
really finish setting up your account.
I'm going to try and login on a different server and see if I can get that
authorized by toot.
I suppose in time some really good instructions for doing this step by
step will be available but for now, mastodon is too young for that.
