Hello,
To be sure, what you (Paul and Pawel) mean writing "within the terminal"?
Is it on a virtual terminal aka tty (like having chosen to start the system in
text mode)?
Or is it in a graphical terminal like mate-terminal, having chosen to start the
system in graphical mode using lightdm?
I ask because Paul confirmed in the brltty mailing list that he did have
keyboard input during the installation but not after, and I still need why it
worked there net not after and the installer runs in text mode only.
Also Paul to answer one of your questions in the brltty mailing list:
If you start in text mode (in the tty number 1) to switch to the graphical mode
you type startx.
If you are in graphical mode, to switch to text mode you press for instance
Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go to the tty number 2, and there you will need to log in again.
Then you can switch to graphical mode again pressing Alt+F7.
This is because when you type startx the graphical environment is bound to the
tty from where you types startx +6, (usally 1), so 7.
Also, after having typed startx the tty from where you typed it stays busy.
This is why I suggested to switch from graphical to text mode in tty 2, not tty
1.
I hope not to have added to the confusion...
Also Pawel, the brltty team is aware of the issue as Paul first posted it there.
And Orca only comes into play if the issue is observed in graphical mode, hence
my first question to Paul.
Cheers,
Didier

Hello Paul,===============================================================================
So you simply have a bigger brother of my unit.
One way or the other, I must confirm your finding regarding the lack of input
capabilities of Braille keyboard within the terminal and relatively poor
navigation too.
I suppose we need let know about this the BRLTTY & ORCA groups.
Best,
Pawel

Hello Pawel,
I have a Focus 80 Blue (5th Gen). I mostly use the braille keyboard for
navigation and switch braille tables. But it is not responsive in the
terminal. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Paul

Hello Paul,
I've been using a Braille display on daily basis; however, I usually use my
regular keyboard for my input.
Now, let us know what model of the Braille display you've been working with,
please?
Can you be more descriptive about your Braille display keyboard usage, let
say some scenarios your keyboard doesn't work, please.
I have my slightly broken Focus40 with me so I may try to copy your scenarios
at my end to see how it works for me.
Please upgrade your release of BRLTTY to 6.6.
Talk to you soon,
Pawel

Thanks for the detailed reply Didier, it's very much appreciated. I will
reread it and look at each step carefully.
The version of BRLTTY I currently have installed is 6.5. I haven't updated
the system yet.
I am experiencing the issue with braille input in both the console and GUI.
I will report back when I have gone through all the items you mention.
All the best, Paul

Hello Paul,
Caveat: I do not own a braille device and do not know how to use one.
@All: if you use input from your braille device (instead or in addition to a
regular keyboard), feel fee to answer feel free to complete of fix what I
write in this post.
1. I am puzzled that you had braille input during installation but not after.
If the most recent brltty version was installed from a remote repository
(should be the case if you had an internet connection during installation) or
you updated the system after installation you have brltty 6.6 whereas the
installer has 6.5. I do not know if that matters but anyway to be sure please
post the output of "brltty --version"
2. In /etc/brltty.conf there is chapter Keyboard Settings. If not done please
check the default settings and edit them as need be (and also other settings,
of course), then restart brltty as indicated below.
3. The way to start the daemon during the startup sequence is to make the
file /etc/rc.d/rc.brltty executable, using sudo or as root: chmod 755
/etc/rc.d/rc.brltty. Then you can type /etc/rc.d/rc.brltty start|stop|restart
(we do not uses systemd services in Slint).
4. As indicated in https://slint.fr/en/HandBook.html#_use_slint_with_braille ;
you (the regular user) should be a member of the braille group. For that, as
root or using sudo please type: usermod -G braille -a username paul (I
assume that you username is "paul").
4. In Slint by default brltty is started as root. If you started brltty as
regular user, try to kill it then start it as root. Does the issue remain?
I mention this because granting capabilities is not necessary if brltty is
started as root.
5. Does the "no braille input" occurs in thr console or only in a graphical
environment like Mate?

Hello all,>===============================================================================
@Didier
I have braille input when installing Slint on an old Intel NUC to test
it out but after launch I don't have braille input. BUT I do have the
command brltty-setcaps which I don't have on Ubuntu. Do you know how
to enable the braille keyboard input on Slint?
The same capabilities aren't granted: sys_admin, cap_sys_tty_config,
and cap_mknod
