Bok!

2. Project description:

JAWS Screen Reader Adaptation for Mozilla Firefox

Client: Dr. John Slatin, Director of the UT Accessibility Institute

Objective: The goal of the Sharkware Development team is to create
compatibility between Freedom Scientific's JAWS Screen Reader and the
Mozilla Firefox next generation browser.

The JAWS Screen Reader Adaptation project is aimed at making JAWS more
compatible for the Mozilla Firefox Next Generation Browser so that
users of JAWS and those dependent on low-vision tools have a choice
other than Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Description: This project has resulted in a JAWS script and a Firefox
extension that enable JAWS to function with Mozilla Firefox in a similar
manner to how JAWS functions with Internet Explorer. Our product gives
support for simple navigational functions as well as more complex
functions that allow for alt text reading, link recognition, etc.

===========================
3. Minimum requirements:

PC: Must be capable of running JAWS and Firefox.

*other: Firefox 1.0 PR
        JAWS 5.10

(We anticipate that this product will also work on later versions of
Firefox and JAWS as well, but only the versions listed here are
officially supported.)

===========================
4. Project directory structure:

doc/ - contains project documentation files
home/ - contains team home page and reports
src/ - contains JAWS scripts and various
                       other source files
images/ - contains image files and screenshots
           archive/ - project archive directory

===========================
5. Installation instructions:

Installation consists of two required parts (JAWS Script and Firefox
extension) and an optional part (a specialized font to reduce
distortion of the visible webpage).

Part 1: JAWS Script Installation - Required

Step 1. Ensure that JAWS and Firefox are installed on your system.
A demo copy of JAWS can be obtained at:
ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/j510383q.exe
A free copy of Firefox can be obtained at:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.10.1/Firefox%20Setup%2
01.0PR.exe

Step 2. Locate your JAWS directory. If you are on JAWS 5.10, the
default directory location is the following:
        C:\JAWS510\

Step 3. Download the executable file at:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/s2s/latest/jaws1/src/sharkware_phase4_a.exe

Step 4. Run the executable. Ensure that the target to unzip to is
"JAWS_pathname"\SETTINGS\enu\ where "JAWS_pathname" is the location of
your JAWS directory determined in step 2. The default would be this:
        C:\JAWS510\SETTINGS\enu\

Step 5. Choose Unzip.

Step 6. Restart your computer. The JAWS scripts have now been installed.

Part 2: Firefox Extension Installation - Required

Note: If you have difficulty with this part of the installation, please
make sure that you are enabling Firefox to install extensions. You can
verify this by starting Firefox and going to Tools, Options, Web
Features and checking the box that says "Allow websites to install
software." This box must be checked before you can proceed with
installation. However, you may later unchecked the box after you have
completed the installation process.

Step 1. Download the following extension file:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/s2s/latest/jaws1/src/sharkware_phase4_b.xpi

Step 2. Go to the location where you have saved this file. Select this
file, and press "Enter."

Step 3. This will automatically start Firefox and bring up a window
that says "Software Installation." In this window, choose the "Install
Now" button. You may have to wait for three seconds before this button
becomes active and is selectable.

Step 4. Restart your computer. The Firefox extension has now been
installed.

Part 3: Special Font Installation - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Note: This part of the installation procedure is optional. If you do
not install this font, JAWS will still be able to function with
Firefox. However, the webpage will appear distorted on the screen.
This will not affect the reading of the webpage, but it may be
confusing to someone who is viewing the screen. Installing this font
will fix this problem.

Step 1. Download the following font file:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/s2s/latest/jaws1/src/blank_font/blankemptiness.tt
f

Step 2. Go to "Start," "Settings," "Control Panel."

Step 3. Once inside the Control Panel, select "Fonts."

Step 4. From the "File" menu item in Fonts, select "Install New Font."
You accomplish this by pressing, "ALT+F" followed by "i" once you have
Fonts opened.

Step 5. Navigate to the directory where you saved the font you
downloaded in Step 1.

Step 6. Select "BLANKEMPTINESS" and then select the "OK" button. The
special font has now been installed.

Congratulations! You have now completed the installation process for
the JAWS Screen Reader Adaptation for Mozilla Firefox.

*** SPECIAL NOTE TO SCRIPTERS
To view scripts and internal documentation, please use the JAWS
Script Manager to view the source code. You can change the comments
by clicking on the name of the script and pressing ctrl+d. The comments
for each function can be checked by clicking on the name of the
function and pressing shift+f1.

Only firefox.JSS is really source code that is meant to be viewed.
Everything else is automatically tied in to it through the script
manager.
