RA Lafferty might just be the most important science-fiction writer you've
never heard of.
Raphael Aloysius Lafferty – RA for the byline, "Ray" to friends – was born on
7 November 1914 but, centenary year aside, what singles out Lafferty's work
from the legions of forgotten paperback SF writers is the sheer absurdity of
much of his output and the singular marriage of fable, comedy and fantasy that
underpins his writing – including his novels Past Master, Space Chantey and
Fourth Mansions, and his huge body of short stories.
Take his 1969 novel Fourth Mansions, a tale of rival world-spanning
conspiracies duking it out to shape mankind's next level."
Lafferty kan beskrivas som totalt absurd. Men han behandlar ändå det absurda
med någon form av logik. Oftast utbryter en myckenhet humor. Han har skrivit
romaner, men hans noveller är kanske t o m ännu bättre. Jag såg till att få in
minst en Lafferty-novell i Nova SF (vilken jag också översatte - däremot
passade han inte för Teknikmagasinets sf-noveller, som skulle vara litet mer
mainstream; där brukade robert Sheckley passa bra). En favorit för t ex Neil
Gaiman.
Jag har faktiskt, ungefär, träffat Lafferty. På min första världskongress i
Brighton 1979 kom Lafferty en gång invandrande i baren bärande på ett ölglas.
Jag kände till honom, men hade då inte hunnit börja läsa hans stories, och såg
hans namn på badgen. Jag gick inte fram till honom, eftersom jag inte läst
honom...men, men man har varit i Mästarens Närhet, faktiskt.
