Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien observes that this might be the best example ofjust
how great Sinatra was as a concert performer in the late 70's and early80's.
This concert was in the round and Don Costa opened the show conducting
theorchestra. They played a long Beatles medley and then a Sinatra medley.
Costa wrote both of them. Sinatra was superb from the get-go. He lookedgreat,
sang splendidly, and did a terrific program.Concerts1939 Roseland Ballroom, New

<https://www.upi.com/author/Robert-Kieckhefer/> (0) CHICAGO -- An overflow
crowd jammed ChicagoFest, some of them waiting nearly7 hours to get a look at
the man behind the 'Ole Blue Eyes' legend -- FrankSinatra who wowed them with
about an hour of old standbys.'I am a fan like you wouldn't believe,' said
Joyce Simon, 50, who was thefirst person in line before the main gate opened at
4 p.m. Tuesday. 'I wouldgo to the end of the Earth to see Sinatra. Ms. Simon
arrived at 9

with blanket, pillow and thermos to be sure she wouldget a good look at her
heart throb. 'I saw him when I was in bobby-socks at the Chicago Theater in the
'40s,'said Marilyn Rogoff of Skokie, Ill. 'Oh, that brings a tear to my eye.
Itmakes me feel so old.' Appearing under a neon sign that alternately flashed
'Mayor Byrne's' and'ChicagoFest,' Sinatra drew a roar from the audience when he
put together amedley of 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco,' 'New York, New
York,' and thesong everyone expected to hear -- 'My Kind of Town.' 'We're
really proud to be part of this,' he told the crowd between songs. He then was
whisked into a limousine for a drive to Meigs Field, caught ahelicopter to
O'Hare Airport and left town. Promoters said Sinatra has seldom, if ever, done
fair-type appearances. The crowd filled the 25,000 main stage seats and the
10,000 standing-roomspaces. Many thousands more stood outside the main stage
area, listeningwhen the wind currents drifted Sinatra's voice in their
direction. 'I've always avoided ChicagoFest because of the crowd,' said Linda
Cohen, who moved to Chicago from Des Moines, Iowa, about five years ago. 'But
Ifigured it would be worth it for this.' She said she stood far back in the
crowd, but was satisfied. 'I told my mother I'd be there vicariously for her,'
Ms. Cohen said. Sinatra, wearing a

suit and white shirt, was greeted with 10,000 whiteballoons passed out by
promoters. The audience was urged to let the balloonsgo when Sinatra walked on
stage but many apparently kept them as souvenirs. note: Sinatra was paid
$235,000 for this performance. Liza Minnelli received$245,000 for two
performances and Tony Bennett was paid $50,000 for one show.C 1997-2021 The

opened the show conducting the orchestra. They played a long Beatles medley and

legend -- Frank Sinatra who wowed them with about an hour of old standbys.'I am

blanket, pillow and thermos to be sure she would get a good look at her heart

'40s,' said Marilyn Rogoff of Skokie, Ill. 'Oh, that brings a tear to my eye.
It makes me feel so old.' Appearing under a neon sign that alternately flashed
'Mayor Byrne's' and 'ChicagoFest,' Sinatra drew a roar from the audience when
he put together a medley of 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco,' 'New York, New

really proud to be part of this,' he told the crowd between songs. He then was
whisked into a limousine for a drive to Meigs Field, caught a helicopter to
O'Hare Airport and left town. Promoters said Sinatra has seldom, if ever, done
fair-type appearances. The crowd filled the 25,000 main stage seats and the
10,000 standing-room spaces. Many thousands more stood outside the main stage
area, listening when the wind currents drifted Sinatra's voice in their
direction. 'I've always avoided ChicagoFest because of the crowd,' said Linda
Cohen, who moved to Chicago from Des Moines, Iowa, about five years ago. 'But I
figured it would be worth it for this.' She said she stood far back in the
crowd, but was satisfied. 'I told my mother I'd be there vicariously for her,'
Ms. Cohen said. Sinatra, wearing a black suit and white shirt, was greeted with

My WayNotes: Unedited. 100 min. Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien observes that this
might be the best example of just how great Sinatra was as a concert performer
in the late 70's and early 80's. This concert was in the round and Don Costa
opened the show conducting the orchestra. They played a long Beatles medley and
then a Sinatra medley. Costa wrote both of them. Sinatra was superb from the
get-go. He looked great, sang splendidly, and did a terrific
program.Concerts1939 Roseland Ballroom, New York Harry James and his Orchestra

ARCHIVES AUG. 11, 1982Ole Blue eyes wows 'em by Lake MichiganBy ROBERT
KIECKHEFER (0) CHICAGO -- An overflow crowd jammed ChicagoFest, some of them
waiting nearly 7 hours to get a look at the man behind the 'Ole Blue Eyes'
legend -- Frank Sinatra who wowed them with about an hour of old standbys.'I am
a fan like you wouldn't believe,' said Joyce Simon, 50, who was the first
person in line before the main gate opened at 4 p.m. Tuesday. 'I would go to
the end of the Earth to see Sinatra. Ms. Simon arrived at 9 a.m., complete with
blanket, pillow and thermos to be sure she would get a good look at her heart
throb. 'I saw him when I was in bobby-socks at the Chicago Theater in the
'40s,' said Marilyn Rogoff of Skokie, Ill. 'Oh, that brings a tear to my eye.
It makes me feel so old.' Appearing under a neon sign that alternately flashed
'Mayor Byrne's' and 'ChicagoFest,' Sinatra drew a roar from the audience when
he put together a medley of 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco,' 'New York, New
York,' and the song everyone expected to hear -- 'My Kind of Town.' 'We're
really proud to be part of this,' he told the crowd between songs. He then was
whisked into a limousine for a drive to Meigs Field, caught a helicopter to
O'Hare Airport and left town.
'I told my mother I'd be there vicariously for her,'
Ms. Cohen said. Sinatra, wearing a black suit and white shirt, was greeted with
10,000 white balloons passed out by promoters. The audience was urged to let
the balloons go when Sinatra walked on stage but m any apparently kept them as
souvenirs. note: Sinatra was paid $235,000 for this performance. Liza Minnelli
received $245,000 for two performances and Tony Bennett was paid $50,000 for
one show. 1997-2021 The Sinatra ArchiveThis calendar, or any parts thereof,

-0400I watched the entire performance this morning. What a genius! Almost a
bare stage with just a chair, a side table, and the microphone yet, as Ed says,
I feel almost as if he is in the room with me nestled among prize possessions.
These Foolish Things is the gem of this concert for me. _____________Jim

Such a tender performance of this song, and some great technical skills on
display too: the glissando going into the bridge and the still beautifully
resonant low note on the last line. > > Captivating stuff. > > -Vance>
And the way he maneuvers the chair. The confidence he exudes creates a
