(17 seconds), Take 4 (18 seconds), and Take 5 (17 seconds).,  Part 3 had
Take 4 (13 seconds) and Take 5 (13 seconds) mastered.  Part 8 had Take 8 (38
seconds), Take 12 (37 seconds), and Take 16 (41 seconds) mastered.,  Part 10
had Take 3 (1:20) and Take 4 (1:20) mastered.

"Otchi-TCHOR- NI-YA" had only one take of 40 seconds.

Ed O'Brien:
Show was a summer replacement series on Sunday nights with George Murphy as
the moderator. The series began on 7-4-48 and ran for 13 weeks. Frank's
appearance was on
the final broadcast. Listening to it today, one has to wonder what NBC was
thinking. The
best of the guests that night was Jack Benny.

  Frank Sinatra plays Joe E. Lewis, a famous comedian of the 1930s-50s. When
the movie opens, Lewis is a young, talented singer who performs in
speakeasies. When he bolts one job for another, the mob boss who owns the
first speakeasy has his thugs try to kill Lewis. Lewis survives, but his
vocal cords are cut and he cannot sing. Several years later, his buddy
Austin Mack (Eddie Albert) tracks him down and tries to help him with little
success. That attempt, though, leads to Lewis meeting Letty Page (Jeanne
Crain). They fall in love and she inspires him to follow up on an offer to
become a comedian (a result of his buddy's failed attempt to rejuvenate his
singing career). Lewis has problems, though. The assault that nearly cost
him his life also helped turn him into an alcoholic and an inveterate
gambler. These two character defects become the basis for his act and help
to make him a smash success. Unfortunately, they also work to wreak havoc in
his personal life with Letty and then with his wife Martha (Mitzi Gaynor).

Frank Sinatra loved Joe E. Lewis. He considered Lewis one of the funniest
men who had ever lived.
In the summer of 1955, Sinatra learned of a forthcoming biography of the
comedian written by Art Cohn.
Frank moved quickly to get the bio "The Story Of Joe Lewis" while it was
still in galleys form. MGM was
also aware of the book and immediately offered Lewis $150,000 for the
rights. He turned them down
after Frank indicated he wanted to star in it for his brand new company
Bristol Productions. The
company would own 25% of the film and a large share of the gross profits.
Paramount Pictures
worked out a deal with Frank, Joe E.. Charles Vidor (director) and Cohn.
Each man would receive
$400,000 dollars plus split 75% of the studio's profits.
Filming got underway on October 15, 1956. The shooting schedule accommodated
Sinatra's
way of life with most of the work being done in the afternoon and early
evening. Mitzi Gaynor,
Jeanne Crain and Eddie Albert were cast in major roles. Cahn & Van Heusen
were asked to write
the music including parodies, Nelson Riddle would arrange the numbers and
Walter Scharf would
write the score and conduct. The film would be shot in VistaVision and in
black and white. Frank
decided not to pre-record the songs. They were sung as the scenes were being
shot on the set.
Frank wanted the excitement and noise of a nightclub setting. Cahn & Van
Heusen submitted a
song titled "The Greatest Little Sign In The World" and Oakland/Maxwell
submitted "The Bird Song."
Both were rejected as too sexually suggestive. Another Cahn/Van Heusen
attempt, titled "All The Way"
was deemed acceptable. The production went very smoothly until 11/27 when
Frank was told
Tommy Dorsey had died. He was unable to continue filming for the rest of the
day. Frank
was very busy recording during the making of the movie. He completed "Close
To You" and
also laid down "A Swingin'Affair." The film was completed in mid-December at
a cost of
$2,000,000.
The world premiere took place at the El Portal Theatre in Las Vegas on
8-23-57. Joe E.
Lewis rode a horse, led by Frank Sinatra in a tux, wearing a jockey's cap,
to the theatre.
An attempt to ride right into the movie house failed when the horse balked.
Lewis quipped
that everyone was a critic. Film got underway at 11: P.M.. After all the
Vegas stars did their
late show, a party got underway at four in the morning. The New York opening
took place
on 9-26 at the Capitol Theatre and the L.A.showing opening at the Pantages
the same
day with Frank attending with his date Lauren Bacall. The critical response
was very
positive with Sinatra receiving raves for his powerful depiction of Lewis's
run in with
gangsters and his alcoholism. The film grossed more than $3,000,000 dollars
and
"All The Way" won the Oscar for best song of 1957. Subsequent releases saw
the
film retitled "All The Way." The working title during the filming was simply
"The Joker."
Although the film was out of print for many years because of a problem with
the Lewis
Estate. Here is a copy available on ebay. It is my understanding the quality
is good,
but not up to the highest standards of today's releases. The enclosed case
offers the original poster that
Scott posted plus some stills .
