(Tom Adair/Matt Dennis)

Arranged & Conducted by Gordon Jenkins
(3:41) CD: 46013-2 The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings Disc 17

-- Listen to this recording and then the one from 4-8-81. In 74, Frank was
nearing the end of his bel canto singing days. He realized that something had
to done. Robert Merrill taught him how to sing from his bellows. What a difference
it made.

SCA5051 The Saddest Thing Of All- N/R
(Michel Legrand/Pierre Leroyer/Edward Ruault/Carl Sigman)
(ZIMRA/SACEM)
Arranged & Conducted by Gordon Jenkins

NOTE: Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien says that these recordings were done at the Warner Burbank Studio with a 43-piece orchestra.. "Everything Happens to Me" had new lyrics from Tom Adair. Third time around for Sinatra on this one. He did with Dorsey at RCA and with Riddle at Capitol. The effort here is okay but the fourth time proved to be the charm for the updated version.

"Saddest Thing . . ." is a dirge. The re-do in August of 1975 was a better vocal and a livelier chart. But "Just As Though You Were Here" is a great, great recording. The 1942 effort with Dorsey is quite nice but this beauty is Sinatra at his absolute best in the post-retirement phase of his career. O'Brien says he will never forget the first time he heard it and wishes that Sinatra had built an album around it.

Ad-agency president Dan Edwards (Sinatra) who, when he goes to Mexico to celebrate his nineteenth wedding anniversary, winds up getting divorced by mistake - whereupon his wife Valerie (Kerr) marries his best friend Ernie Brewer (Martin) by mistake. Once over the shock, Ernie anticipates a quickie divorce, but Val thinks she might enjoy the new arrangement. Dan, fed up with both of them, decides he's not exactly broken-hearted either. He re-discovers the joys of bachelorhood, cavorting with Ernie's sexy playmates. As for poor Ernie, it's now up to him to run the business, which turns him into the same dull, inattentive husband that her first spouse had been. In the end, however, everything is put right.
Note:  Nancy Sinatra plays Frank Sinatra's daughter in the film.

1952, Latin Casino, Philadelphia, Pa (September 23 - October 1, 1952)

note: Frank played eight days over a nine day period. He was dark on
Monday. He was set to open at the Chase Club, in St. Louis, on 10/3,
but some personal problems delayed that gig until Saturday the fourth.
His two week run would net him $10,000 a week.  Frank was fighting an
uphill battle to get the role of Maggio in "Eternity," his last session
at Columbia was on 9-17, TV and radio were not interested. This was
the absolute nadir of his 60 year career.

Ed O'Brien observes that Sinatra wasn't singing all that well in September of 1976. He had become a marathon performer in concert venues and the wear and tear was really beginning to show. That said, the Premier appearance has some wonderful moments. His decision to sing "Like a Sad Song" with Al Viola on guitar was a master stroke. O'Brien much prefers it to the Ogerman-backed large orchestra studio effort. Denver's song cried out for simple, understated treatment. Bill Miller backing Sinatra on "Empty Tables" is another real highlight

Sinatra was to have played two shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles September 23-24, 1994 but the shows were cancelled.
Ed O'Brien offers an explanation why the Greek Theatre dates were cancelled:

"Shows cancelled at Greek Theater had nothing to do with Frank recording.
He sold out the Greek in just a few days. Barbara had been told how much Frank had struggled in
Boston, Lenox, Cincinnati, etc. She did not want that to happen in L.A.."  --ED
