#yiv1300789393 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}Hi Ed,
Over the summer of 1941 there was an article in a paper about how Paul Mason
had started a job at a local music store.
At first I thought, "well that seems a big step down", especially as he was
getting some spotlight with the whole 'hillbilly' novelty thing Dorsey was
doing. But then I look at the schedule of the band and I think, yeah, I can see
the appeal of moving to a normal 9-to-5. And Paul wasn't young - he was only
member of the band too old to be considered for the January 1941 draft.
Richard When the band played Shea's Buffalo, Sept. 41, T.D. was 35
and Sinatra was 25. Draft at that time took men between the ages of 18 and 36.
After Pearl Harbor, Congressamended it to 18 - 64. But the military did not
want men over 45. Peter Levinson gave me transcripts of the
interviews he did with Jo Stafford, JohnHuddleston, Connie Haines and Joe
Bushkin. I should dig them out and share some of thecommentary from those
interviews.Ed

Hi Richard, You inspired me to check the schedulefor the
Dorsey band on 9-18-41. Wow ! Jo Staffordnailed it when she told me "you had to
be young."There were morning and afternoon sessions atRCA Studio 2 in N.Y.C.
The band recorded six songs.
Then the WNEW appearance 6: P.M. followed by a huge all night party that turned
intoa brawl.
After the ball was over, the band may have slept for a few hours before
heading out to Buffalo for a week's run at the Shea'sBuffalo ( 19th thru the
25th ) They woulddo seven shows per day. Dorsey workedand played hard. Frank
told Vinnie Falconethat TD was a tremendous influence and helearned so much
from the man.Ed
