Sinatra performed with the Hoboken Four
1940 Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood , California (October 31 - December 12)
Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra w/Frank Sinatra
A sensational opening night. A who's who of celebrities flocked to the New
Palladium Ballroom Cafe( name changed to Hollywood
Palladium within a few weeks) that Halloween evening. Dorothy Lamour cut the
ribbon to inaugurate the exciting new night spot.
The lead up to the opening was not without controversy. Dorsey had signed a
contract to play a two week engagement at the
Paramount Theatre, prior to the Palladium opening. The management of the new
club filed a lawsuit and was granted an injunction
to stop the engagement at the Paramount . Dorsey claimed he had been assured
him that the Palladium had no objections regarding
the agreement. He immediately, upon learning of the Paramount's dastardly deed,
backed out of his earlier agreement.
The NBC Red Network broadcast a half-hour of Tommy and Co from the Palladium
that evening, from 11:30 to 12:00 over KFI
radio from Los Angeles. The show was heard throughout the western half of the
country. TD and His Band would be heard
every day for the rest of the month. KFI would broadcast, on most nights, a
half-hour from 11:30 to midnight. Fame and
Fortune would be heard every Thursday at 8:30 pm for 30 minutes(EST). Saturday
the Tommy Dorsey show would be aired
from 5 to 6:pm and starting on 11/19 a half-hour Dorsey show would be broadcast
nationwide starting at 8:pm. What a schedule.
And we must remember the band was also making their first movie at the
Paramount Studios( "Las Vegas Nights") and there were also
recording sessions to do. Frank Sinatra was working very hard and learning his
craft from a true master.
