NOTE: Sinatraphile Vance Adair writes that "I'm Not Afraid" is a guilty
pleasure of his. Apart from the excellent vocals, he says that he also likes
the arrangement.

Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien responded to Adair's observation: Guitarist Al
Viola told me that Sinatra could hardly stand up for the final take. The
vocal effort was so all encompassing that he was using the music stand for
support.

Jonathan Schwartz, O'Brien continues, was driving to Manhattan when he first
heard the recording on WNEW. He drove up on the sidewalk and sat there
listening. A few days later he had a discussion with a fellow DJ who
dismissed Sinatra's effort because it was a Rod McKuen song. Jonathan
responded with, "It's the singing; it's the singing." " 'Tis true 'tis
true," O'Brien agrees.

Adair thanked O'Brien for this information and then added: The singing is
indeed superb and Sinatra's exhaustion was well worth the effort. The
arrangement may be a hair's breath short of campy old nonsense, yet it is a
tune that I come back to frequently. Entrusted to any other singer, it would
almost certainly have been a case of undiluted bombast.

Speaking of supercharged vocal, Adair continues, I have just returned from a
singing engagement in Riga , Latvia. A bar close to my hotel looped late 40s
Sinatra every evening. " It alwayss ended with his operatic rendition of
"Lover." And always just before I was about to sing! There really is such a
thing as an act you can't follow", Adair exclaims.

note: Kay Thompson was a multi-talented
lady. She is not remembered today in connection
with Sinatra, but they were close friends for decades.
She served as a creative consultant on his radio, TV,
nightclub and film work. She was invaluable to him
for years. Kay oversaw much of the planning for
the JFK Inaugural Gala including getting rabid Nixon
supporter, Ethel Merman, to sing "Everything's
Coming Up Roses" to the president-elect.
Frank was in tough shape when Kay appeared on
his 10-28-50 show. She sang "That Old Feeling"
and then did a duet with Frank on "(The Birds Are
Talkin') 'Bout You'n' Me," backed by The Whippoorwills..
Frank and Kay also did a comedy sketch with Ben Blue,
titled "Hot Closet. " She stayed on as creative consultant
for four weeks. But when the producer, Irving Mansfield,
threw in the towel, Kay followed him out the door.

P.S. The early shows of the series, before Bulova agreed
to sponsor the first half-hour, had a wild opening. The
camera was set up in the audience and came down toward
the orchestra pit, in front of the stage, and zeroed in on Axel
Stordahl's bald head. Early television was memorable in many
strange and unusual ways.

only experience at this hallowed hall. Here is an excerpt from his extensive
conversation with Vinnie Falcone regarding that evening:

"We did a benefit at the Metropolitan Opera. In the wings, I told him how
nervous I was. He told me that he was, too. Then he said: "Your nervousness,
that's your problem." (Laughs.) That was him. You had to defend yourself and
maintain your stature. He was your best friend if you did."

note: I should have added Frank's follow up. After telling Vinnie that it
was "his problem," Frank looked at him and said, "You'll figure it out."
There were more than 4,000 concert goers in attendance that evening."

while in the Starlight Theatre Room of the Desert
Inn, Frank Jr appeared. He was backed by the Buddy Childer's
Big Band. Jr scheduled his performances around his father's
schedule, so he could conduct for him in the main room.

  This was a great find. But - - - I must correct a claim Frank
made here. He most certainly had vocal training.  John Quinlan
was his teacher, beginning in 1937. Quinlan had sung at the Metro-
politan Opera. He taught Frank the rudimentary skills of singing.
Frank would admit later on Quinlan got the Hoboken sound out
out of his voice. The vocal exercise he assigned Frank, going up
and down the scales, was "Let Us Wander By The Bay." Al Viola
told me Frank was still practicing that 40 years later. During
an interview in Australia, in January 1955, Frank mentions
Quinlan and speaks of his regret that John had passed away
the previous year. Quinlan was from Australia and had always
hoped of returning someday. Frank had planned to bring him
along. Frank certainly had voice method lessons.

Do you have a most memorable benefit night?
Probably [the first ball], when "Uncle Frank" [Frank Sinatra] performed. We
used to go to Palm Springs a lot, and one day, we were on the 13th [golf]
fairway, and Frank was on the 10th. Somehow we all became best friends, and
he became "Uncle Frank." That Friday night, we went to dinner, and he said
to Dana, "I'm so sorry that you got this illness, but you know what? I'm
going to put together a big event and I'm going to sing and we're going to
raise a lot of money." She said, "Uncle Frank, who would pay anything to
hear you sing?" She had no idea what Uncle Frank did. Uncle Frank came and
sang that first year, and it was just great.
