Kenny Lucas:
I've always wondered if the October 1970 recording sessions were originally
for a contemporary album.

He recorded enough songs during those 3 days for a LP, Ed I am sure you
would know.

Ed O'Brien:
Sinatra was planning a tribute album to Billie Holiday in the fall of 1970.
Lennie Hayton was the arranger
Frank wanted for the project. The October sessions were more of a
hodge-podge in search of a
hit single. The first 45 issued  from the sessions was "Feelin' Kinda
Sunday," with his daughter Nancy. The
next release was "Bein' Green/Something". Frank liked the idea of recording
an album of songs for children.
If the Raposo tune had been a moderate success, that project would have gone
forward. The last single issued
was "I'm Not Afraid/Life's A Trippy Thing," again with Nancy. "I Will Drink
The Wine/
Sunrise In The Morning" was issued in England. So eight of the 11 songs
recorded were issued on
singles. If there had been one hit, from the bunch, there would have been an
album release. "Bein'
Green" was the most successful, reaching #22 on Billboard's Adult
Contemporary list and charting
for six weeks. Certainly not good enough to justify building an album
around. I have an interview with
Costa in which he expresses great dissatisfaction at what was done at the
October/November 1970
sessions. The "Lady Day" album was never done because Hayton had recurring
heart problems.
He would die in April of 1971.

Ed O'Brien:
College football got Dorsey again. The scheduled hour show ran 22 minutes
because
the Notre Dame-Illinois game, at Champagne, Illinois, ran over its allotted
time. The
Fighting Irish liked playing on Saturday, the 26th, so they shutout Illinois
26-0,
KFI, in L.A,, provided the feed for the Dorsey broadcast. TD and Co. were
about to
be the inaugural act at the Hollywood Palladium.The Dorsey band would also
appear in their first film. The Paramount production was titled "Las Vegas
Nights."
Shooting would get underway in early November. Jo Stafford told me it was
murder
playing the Palladium into the wee hours and then being on the movie lot at
6:a.m.
sharp. She always fell asleep while the make up people worked on her. She
told me
Frank was fascinated by the excitement and glamour of Hollywood. He stayed
very
busy during the bands extended stay out west.

at the Paramount Theater, that afternoon he was the main attraction at a
luncheon

at the Waldorf. The Saints & Sinners Club made him a life time member. Tex
O'Rourke

introduced Frankie to the audience. As the thin singer stood at the
microphone, the

S&S produced caricatures of Lauritz Melchior and Bing Crosby on the wall
behind

him. Frank rushed over to WJZ from the Paramount that evening.
