NOTE: Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien reports that Sinatra did four one-hour
shows for ABC-TV during the 1959-60 season. This show was easily the best of
the lot. Crosby, Martin, and Gaynor work so well together. They did some
terrific medleys that night. Durante was a surprise guest. (The three stars
were set to star in the Durante film bio with Frank Capra directing.) But
the best of the hour were the solo numbers done by Sinatra.

the October 21, 1953 issue of VARIETY magazine. Here are extracts:

Frank Sinatra has always appealed to the gambling genre. His previous
bookings in Las Vegas have signaled turnaway biz for the entire span. Now,
bolstered even more by the success of the Maggia role in "From Here to
Eternity," he reaches into ranks of moderate bet-flingerss and insures more
than capacity for his three-frame Sandstand.

Although high on the list of a top moneymaker in Vegas, Sinatra's vocals and
attitude have left much to be desired among discriminating customers. With
this return, he fronts a dulcet repertoire of standards. As he meanders down
memory lane, Sinatra slams the door on his former worshippers to please an
older and less exuberant set of applauders.

Whether selling a fleeting hit parader or an evergreen, the unmistakeable
stamp of quality is always evident. Jarring the pleasant reverie are
tendencies to insert dubious gags or parody lines in great established
melodies, ennui and mechanically phrased offerings of humility. Offset these
with top showmanship, striving toward perfection, flair for the dramatic,
and that's the very complex guy Sinatra.

Frank Sinatra succeeded here in
getting to them after a few hassles with
local press. His hour-long songalogue
received fan acclaim.
Frank Sinatra, the spindly crooner
who is not noted for warmth toward an
audience, this week tried hard to change
his ways in the Copa Room, and suc-
ceeded, after drawing severe column raps
from local papers for his rough treatment
on musicians behind him on opening
night.
Supporting acts were cut down to
feature almost an hour of Sinatra, which
his fans appreciated and others politely
endured. He relied mostly on old recorded
favorites, such as "I Get A Kick Out Of
You," "You Go To My Head." "They Can't
Take That Away From Me," "This Can't
Be Love," "It All Depends On You," "Spring
Is Here," "All Of Me," "Don't Worry 'Bout Me,"
"Where Or When," "I've Got The World On
A String," and "Night And Day." Sinatra was
most effective in the sentimental "One For My
Baby."
Only supporting act was the Nicholas
Brothers, an amazing pair of song and
dance artisans, who begin where most
other similar acts leave off, and provide
one of the most crowd-pleasing performances
ever to play Las Vegas.
Chorus numbers are done pleasantly by
the Copa Girls, with music by the orchestra
of Ray Sinatra, cousin of the crooner.

note: Imagine seeing Sinatra perform in a room
that seated less than 450 patrons. And there
was no cover or minimum. The Comeback-Kid
offered up 20 or more great tunes at each show,
including ballad versions of "Where Or When"
and "Day In, Day Out," The rhythm numbers
were sung with just an octet and there were
songs with just piano accompaniment ( Bill
Miller ). After his triumphant two weeks at
Bill Miller's Riviera ( Sept. 8 to 22 ), with a
nine piece chamber set, Frank demanded
the very best from the musicians backing
him at the Sands. I'm sure that explains
the blow-up on opening night (10-13 ).
Frank's first engagement at the Sands
proved to be a tumultuous time both
onstage and in his private life. His two
year marriage to Ava Gardener was
coming apart and the artist had exper-
ienced a remarkable rebirth. His affiliation
with the Sands would endure for the next
15 years. The first of 28 appearances
would run for two weeks. He closed on
10-26. The hotel paid him $10,000 a week.

   A nice photo - October 19, 1935 - the Major Bowes' Radio Amateurs tour
the local Standard Brands factory (owners of Major Bowes' sponsors Chase and
Sanborn). The amateurs were said to have "expressed amazement and delight at
the modern methods of production which were revealed to them".
    The groups itinerary for that day is well documented by the local press.
The Vice-Mayor greeted them when they got to town, and then they went to
visit the actual Mayor at City Hall, who presented them with the keys to the
city. They then went on the factory tour.
   They did a show at the Oakland Auditorium arena 8:30pm, and were then
featured guests at the California Santa Clara Dance at the Hotel Oakland.
   The second show - same time and place on October 20th - was for the
benefit of the Alameda Lodge of Elks.
   A review excerpt for October 19th reads: "The youngsters approached their
chores with a zest which does not always remain with the professional and
the audience indicated by its thunderous hand-patting that it was prepared
to approve every particular"
    Of all the Bowes information I've managed to track down these past
couple of weeks, this is the only one with a photo.
