I agree - the Jobim album deserves all these superlatives. Every time I
listen to it I am struck by the sheer artistry of the singing. The use of
dynamics and nuance is exquisite. There is no way to extricate the singer
and the song - they are seamless.

FS really cared about this project and you hear the results. By this point
in the 60s he was getting bored and just a little bit mannered in his
phrasing….Yet when he was presented with material worthy of his talents FS
demonstrated once again that he was peerless as a singer.

*NOTE: Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien notes that the Sinatra/Jobim album is
now over 50 years old. It is the finest work that Sinatra did at Reprise.
The truly great ones are timeless and this album is as exciting and fresh
as it was in 1967. The first session was done with a 24-piece orchestra at
Western Recorders studio from 8 to11:30 P.M. Sonny Burke, the producer, in
an interview described how Frank went into training prior to the sessions,
He swam hundreds of laps under water, cut back on his drinking and smoking
and got lots of rest. He knew how demanding the sets would be and wanted to
be ready. I would say, without much fear of contradiction, that Frank laid
down one definitive track after another at the sessions, O'Brien exclaims.
His reading of Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You" is a minor masterpiece.
Aloysia deOliveira, lyricists for "Dindi," dissolved into tears at the
session, Sinatra's reading of that song was so perfect and the author knew
it. Berlin's "Change Partners" never had nor would sound as romantic as it
did that night. Magnificent Sinatra! In response to Sinatraphile John
Brown, O"Brien says he'll never forget the first time he saw the cover of
the album. I knew it was a great album before putting it on the turntable.
It just had the perfect look to it.. At that time, I bought all my LPs at a
now long gone record store, called Dauber's. They had a number of Sinatra
collectors including a female professor from Russell Sage College . She had
heard about the Jobim and came in one Friday afternoon to purchase it and
then rush right home. Well, she decided to take a bath, little wine on the
side and Sinara-Jobim on the phonograph  very loud. She hopped into the tub
and got ready to hear the sublime album, Unfortunately, Reprise had a
slight problem with product control. Instead of the Sinatra-Jobim, the LP
was the new Jimi Hendrix guitar set. Sol Dauber loved telling the story and
her fury upon returning with the album! *K4812

Ed O'Brien noted: One of the best Old Gold Shows.  Sinatra singing with the
Benny Goodman Sextet and then a heartfelt tribute to FDR. When Frank
visited the White House in the fall of 1944, he asked Roosevelt what kind
of music he liked. FDR told him he was particularly fond of "Goin' Home"
and "Home On The Range." The week after Roosevelt's death Frank paid a very
emotional tribute to him and sang "Goin' Home" on his Max Factor show. In
March of 46, he recorded what is probably the definitive version of "Home
On The Range." It would remain a very rare recording for years. *

*Note:  Late in the afternoon of the concert day, there was panic at the
Knick Arena. Frank was too distraught over Ava's passing to perform. He had
asked Liza Minnelli to sub for him. With all due respect to Liza, this was
a disaster. Sinatra just had to be the inaugural act at the new arena. Dan
Di Nicola , husband of Susannah McCorkle and art critic at the local CBS
affiliate, confirmed Minnelli was replacing Sinatra. The local TV stations
called me and wanted to know if Sinatra would be there. I had been assured
he would and was told after the initial queries that he was in the air and
heading north from N.Y.C. All but the CBS station trusted my account and
announced Frank would indeed perform that evening. Hard to believe 31 years
have passed since Frank's first appearance in Albany. There is an excellent
section on Frank's performance in John Brady's "Frank and Ava in Love and
