Ed O'Brien:
Here we have a session where Frank knew one song and nailed it in
three takes and another tune he was unfamiliar with and struggled through
16 takes. He had recorded "Come Blow Your Horn" on the Paramount Soundstage
10-25-62. "Call Me Irresponsible" was intended for Fred Astaire and Frank
got it after Fred dropped out of the film project involving the song
("Papa's
Delicate Condition."). This was the first Reprise session where Riddle's
charts would
be acknowledged when the recordings were released. He was no longer
contractually
committed to Capitol Records.

Vance Adair:
Sammy Cahn, somewhat late in life, came to regard this as his favourite
song.
Cahn was justly proud of the ease with which the seven syllable phrase
blends with the music.

note: I have an interview with Cahn in which he talks about his great
disappointment regarding
Astaire. Among singers and songwriters, Fred was considered to be the very
best exponent
  of a song. Berlin, Porter, Gershwin were in awe of his ability to sell
their work to a mass
audience. I have a show that Tony Bennett did with Jonathan Schwartz. They
discuss
how musicians viewed Astaire and Jonathan relates stories from his father,
Arthur Schwartz.

Horrific accident occurred right outside the night club during this
engagement. Happened in early February..

Ed O'Brien:

Tough one to figure. His private life had become a huge burden for him as
a professional entertainer. I also wonder how long he would have been
content
doing the same basic performance night after night after night. "Guys And
Dolls"
was a smash hit and had a long run. MGM wouldn't give him permission to do
the show. Revenge. A few months later they cut him loose. But Frank Sinatra
would have been a great Sky Masterson.
