As far demonstrating control, there’s an embarrassment of riches. Just this
weekend, for example, I marvelled for the thousandth time at the exquisite
control on ‘I Wish I Were In Love Again.’ Not just the great syncopation
but the wonderfully calibrated tonal shifts in the performance between
elation, bitterness, longing and despair. Riddle’s chart helped too, of
course.

                      Frank did indeed say that . Nancy tells the story in
"Frank Sinatra, My Father."
Some years after that January 62 recording, she was sitting in a bar with
her father,
listening to a "Sinatrathon on the radio. When the Berlin song came on,
Frank  listened intently
and then said, "That was tough to do. I couldn't do that anymore. It
takes great control."
                      Roberto Quartin told me another story concerning a
song from the same sessions.
Back in the 1979, Roberto was putting together a two-LP set for release in
Brazil. The project
was titled "Lonely At The Top." One afternoon, while working in his
studio, Frank called him. He
told Roberto that "Together" belonged on the set. Thought it was one of
his best vocals from the
early Reprise years and it fit the concept perfectly.

*Scott Henderson: I listened to "What'll I do" today (2011) on the
anniversary of the recording date. To me, this is one of the most haunting
songs Sinatra ever recorded. Am I mistaken or was this recorded shortly
after Sinatra was pall-bearer at Ernie Kovacs' funeral or am I thinking of
another tune? Ed O'Brien: Kovacs' funeral was on 1-15-62. That evening
Sinatra did the first session for the "Come Waltz With Me" album. The
session reveals a man in not particularly good voice. The last song done
that evening was Berlin's "When I Lost You." Pete Levinson was at all three
sessions for the album. He told me Sinatra was as pale as ashes that first
night. When he started singing everyone in the room thought the night would
be very short. Frank didn't agree and persevered. The album would
eventually be retitled and released as "All Alone." It has the distinction
of being the first Sinatra album to not break into the Billboard Top 20(#25
- charted for 17 wks).. *

*Ed notes: A few weeks ago I mentioned the need to release on DVD some of
the ABC-TV shows from 1958, including the ones with Ella, Jo Stafford and
Dinah Shore. I would also include the above show as an absolute must. Frank
opened the show with a swinging version of Johnny Mercer's "I'm An Old
Cowhand." Louie and Keely did a very funny "Pennies From Heaven" and then
Frank and Keely got together and sang "Birth Of The Blues" ( Frank did
duets of this song with Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Dean Martin and
Sammy Davis Jr. The one with Keely is arguably the best of the lot). Frank
then sang Rodgers and Harts "Bewitched," followed by "When Day Is Done" by
Keely. The show closed with the three of them doing a frenetic vocal on "I
Cant Believe That You're In Love With Me." Some show,it was. *
