NOTE: Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien reports that he interviewed the guitarist
Al Hendrickson.. He played on many sessions with Frank at Columbia ,
Capitol, and Reprise. He also did TV and concert work with him. Al told
O'Brien that Dean and Frank footed the bill for Judy's 1962 special and then
convinced CBS and Bill Paley to do the show by agreeing to be the guest
stars. He remembered the rehearsals in January of 62 and the time and care
both took in helping Judy,

He also related a story about Judy from 1953-54, O'Brien continues.. Frank
was determined to get her back on her feet and decided that throwing a party
at his home was the answer. All the A power makers were invited and Frank
did the cooking. Al was part of a trio hired to entertain during the party.
He couldn't believe how much Frank agonized over the spaghetti sauce. He had
to have it just right and kept asking people to taste it. Early on it became
apparent that Judy would be a no-show. Sinatra was furious and didn't know
what to do. Bogie picked up the phone, called Judy, told her a car would be
at her house in a few minutes, and they expected her to show up. Al
remembered Bogie using some very colorful language. Judy didn't argue and
everything came off quite smoothly. Al also told O'Brien some great stories
about Frank and Billy May.

Ed O'Brien (2015):
Hard to believe this evening was 20 years ago. Tom Dressen
gave Frank a very nice introduction. There were five songs in
the set, Frank was good, real good. After "My Kind Of Town,"
and a rousing ovation, Frank announced he wanted to do one
more. Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh wrote the song for Frank
in 1959. He gave it a listen and passed. In June of 1964, Frank
finally got around to recording it with a dynamite Billy Byers
arrangement, backed by the great Count Basie band. It would become
a staple in his repertoire, beginning in 1979. At the end, the man
remained the eternal optimist: Somehow -- "The Best Was Yet To
Come."

Hepcats and Jive-Jennies are flocking
to the Golden Gate to watch Tommy Dorsey's
organized swing dispensary go into action. For
most local swing addicts, it was their first glimpse
of the bespectacled trombonist-maestro, as it
was his first visit to San Francisco.
Dorsey's regular troupe was with him - Fred Sinatra,
baritone flash; Buddy Rich, drummer; Ziggy Elman, one of
swingdom's top trumpeters; Jo Stafford, standing In nicely
for the ailing Connie Haines, and the Pied Pipers, harmony
quartet.
Elman contributes the major solo work, applying his trumpet
to such novelties as "The Angels Sing" and "Hawaiian War
Chant."
Show was stolen, however, by vocalist Sinatra, whose light
but sustained baritone style worked out on such smoothies
as "This Love of Mine,". "Begin the Beguine" and a funny
pokerfaced satire of of "South of the Border." Dorsey's own
famous trombone turns up only here and there.
Buddy Rich, Dorsey's drummer. is heard in a solo called "Quiet
Please,"a series of meaningless percussion patterns, but afford-
ing a show of virtuosity.
A single non-Dorsey act, and it is sensational..
is the trio of two boys and a girl, Dick, Don and Dinah, acrobatic
clowns, who arrived in time to stir up the show again after some
slow sessions by the Pled Pipers. They presented a whole barrel
of new stuff, and they didn't try too hard for laughs..
A Date With. the Falcon is on the screen.

Tommy Dorsey is playing his
first Frisco date this week and
will leave with a flock of new
friends. With jivey juves hanging
from chandeliers, mere mention
of Dorsey's name in a screen
trailer started a demonstration
at the opener. As curtains parted
with the leader tromboning the
theme, hepsters split the joint
wide open. Dorsey took it with
quiet dignity.
Orch goes from theme right
into a hot "Hallelujah" plus
"When It Hits You" with hot
breaks and vocal stuff by Jo
Stafford and Chuck Peterson.
Ziggy Elman trumpet solos
along the route for returns
second only to Dorsey.
"Song of India," as per a
past Dorsey recording, winds
up the first set. Only outside
specialty, Dick, Don and Dinah,
move in next. Two boys and a
looker do screwball knockabout
that's new here and successfully
sustains the pace.
Pied Pipers resume with "Em-
braceable You," after which Elman
takes over on "When Angels Sing."
Lad figuratively blows his brains out..
Elman and drummer Buddy Rich then
monopolize "Hawaiian War Chant"
with their duet interlude. For no
particular reason Elman then takes
the sticks while Rich does a tap
routine which gets by only because
he can do no wrong.
Frank Sinatra then baritones "Without
A Song" for smash returns. During his
second, "This Love of Mine," the Dorsey
trombone quartet moves in for some nice
stuff. Following "Beguine," Dorsey's trom-
bone works again in "Never Smile Again"
together with Sinatra and the Pipers. Sinatra
finishes his stint with a deadpan version of
"South of the Border" which pleased the mob
although corny.

Here is a fun factoid from the late winter of 1942:

Decca's new 50 cent Black label series annonced they
were releasing a Bing Crosby-Mary Martin single. Crosby's
singles usually sold for 35 cents but the double cost of
talent forced Decca to increase the price. This policy
would continue when Crosby worked with The Andrew
Sisters and others.

February 23 to 25, 1941

FRANK SINATRA JAILED;NEARLY MISSES A SHOW
HARTFORD, CONN.
Frank Sinatra, the singer with Tommy Dorsey,
was arrested and jailed here two weeks ago
while the band was playing the State Theatre.
Sinatra was walking across a street near
the theater-jay- walking at that-when a cop
yelled at him asking him to wait for the light.
"I'm already half across now," Sinatra yelled
back. The cop didn't care. He walked over,
nabbed Sinatra, and took him to jail. Sinatra
explained he was a "figure of national import-
ance" and was due on the stage any minute.
Police told Frank to get another "figure of
national importance" to help him. Finally, with
Dorsey's manager Bobby Burns on hand,
Sinatra was freed after paying $10 for a
ticket to a police benefit. He made the show
in time.
