Jack Eagan, Dorsey's road manager, recalled: "Tommy had planned for Frank to
work
on some new arrangements with Sy Oliver, who'd recently joined the band. But
Jimmy
Blake had taken sick, and Sy, who also played trumpet, had to sub for him.
That left no
time for him to write for Frank. So when Frank made his first appearance
with the band
he only had two songs. First he did a ballad - I forget what it was - it
might have been 'My
Prayer.' Then, of course, he did 'Marie', which was still our big number.
Well, he broke it
up completely. And that was tough to do, because a lot of the kids were big
Jack
Leonard fans. They kept yelling for more, but Frank had no encore prepared.
So right
on-stage he and Tommy went into a huddle and Frank suggested they fake
"South of the
Border." Well that broke it up even more, especially when Frank started
slurring those
notes. You know, right then and there, when he went into the slurring bit
the kids started
screaming, just the way they did at the Paramount. And there was nothing
rigged about it
either. I know, because I was the band's press agent. And I was also Jack
Leonard's
close friend, and I wasn't inclined to go all out for any other singer. No,
those screams
were for real!"

Ed O'Brien noted:
Although "RADD" would not be released until
March of 61, The Sands marquee read "Frank Sinatra:
Ring-A-Ding- Ding." He introduced many of the songs
from the LP during this engagement. Al Porcino told
me that Frank would hire a train car and travel from
Vegas to Miami. He played the Fountainbleau
down there from 2/28 thru 3/13 and the marquee
ran the same heading. Al loved the whole concept.
He said to me, "Frank was a swinger." Funny.

note: After subbing for Sammy on 2/1,
Sinatra opened the next night for a seven
day run. He did two shows a night on both
Friday and Saturday. Sunday he came down
with a bug and cancelled for two days. Tuesday
and Wednesday ( 6 & 7 ), he again did two shows
a night to conclude the engagement. There were
nine shows in all. The bug was quite persistent
and Frank was forced to cancel his appearance
at Harrah's, in Lake Tahoe, from 2-24 thru 2-28.

Performance,
the trustees at the university established a Frank Sinatra Chair in Music
and Theater
Arts. They were thanking a dear friend and supporter of the school. He had
been doing
benefits and working with them since 1947.
