NOTE: Sinatra Scholar Ed O'Brien wonders what others on Sinatraphiles think of this duet with Jobim. He reports that Sinatra got it in his head that the song had homosexual overtones and didn't want it released. O'Brien says that he has talked with many Sinatra collectors who regard it as bizarre.. Personally, O'Brien writes, I like it and wish Reprise 1028 had been issued in album form with all 10 tracks.

Wow! Rich Rosenberg reacts. The guy who has been with Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe and a cast of thousands was worried about sounding gay? And, if it did, who would dare say anything about it? That was not long after the time when, after Jackie Mason joked about Frank and Mia, he ended up getting a rather substantial beating. I'm not saying Frank had something to do it, but it would tend to make one restrain one's comments about him. The song doesn't sound homosexual to me. Musically, it's not among my favorites of the bossa nova numbers, Rich emphasizes.

Rich adds that Mason's joke was that he didn't know who did it, but the guy was singing doobie dobbie do as he walked away!

Sinatraphile Mary Jane Smetanka says recalling this gives her a laugh. A few years ago on another song list, someone commented on the "unusual intimacy" of the Sinatra/Jobim duet on "Man and His Music" and asked for reaction. No one replied, she says. She loves that segment of the show.â It's a true duet, in some of the other filmed duets I've seen, Sinatra seems to be doing his own thing at the expense of his partner, but FS and Jobim are really in sync.

I think Bonita is a beautiful song. There was a foreign Reprise issued
LP called "The Most Beautiful Songs of Frank Sinatra". I think
Dindi, Bonita, & Song of the Sabia should have been on it.

I remember when I tracked down "Portrait of Sinatra", it was a joy to
finally hear Bonita. I felt the same way about Song of The Sabia
when I finally tracked down the Schlagers LP.

I know there was a February 11th version of Bonita but to my
knowledge, it's never been released. Anyone know if it's one a
bootleg somewhere?

Ed O'Brien:
Wasn't recorded. Frank ran it down and decided to push
it ahead one day.

Stupendous is the first word that comes to mind in trying to describe
that incredible evening 43 years ago tonight.
Kanin opened the show by introducing the performers on stage. What
ensued after that was nothing short of magnificent. The discussions that
took place on stage among the performers was pure magic. Sinatra and
Astaire got into a friendly disagreement over whether or not Porter was
a snob. The audience learned that Cole called Merman "The Divine Ethel."
She told wonderful stories about the music he wrote for her. They all
read from Eells new bio. Frank told of the debacle he had with Porter
at the Rustic Cabin in 1938. There was a great deal of back and forth
on the merits of Porter's great work. Astaire told the audience that
Frank was the first one at the rehearsal earlier in the day. Stewart
was very funny in describing his singing of the song Cole wrote
for him. Kelly fondly remembered working with Porter. Lerner
discussed the creative process with Astaire and others.Roger
Edens provided the sole musical support with his piano backings. Ethel
drowned out the rest of the singers on the closing number "Friendship. "
Frank yelled to her, "What the hell are you hollering about ? You got
the job." A great, great evening in the history of show business.

Frank's first engagement at the new casino ran from 2/12 thru 2/18. The song list you put up is correct. Frank did not
sing "Please Be Kind" on the 16th and the song order is not the same. The closing night show is also different. The opening act was Pat Henry. Frank had
Vinnie write a lot of new hot band charts for Vegas and Tahoe in February. Vinnie was the sole support on a few numbers and Tony Mottola did the same on
a few songs with Frank. I found "These Foolish Things" to be a great addition. That marvelous song would go in and out of the act until February 1985..
