This is a very special show for me, the first time I saw Frank live.
I was 19 years old and had been listening to Frank for 20 years. Yes, that's
right for 20 year. Mom was a bobby-soxer and Dad was a huge fan; they were
first generation Italian-Americans from South Philly, it was pretty much
mandatory. So I was listening in utero and all my life.
Dad had seen Frank many times through the years. One time he even dined at the
same restaurant as Frank before a show (or maybe it was after?) and spoke with
him for a bit, definitely a highlight of his life (Dad's if not Franks's).
So this show at the Spectrum was the first time I ever saw Frank and it was
with my dad. An unforgettable experience for sure.
Dad loved vocalists, show tunes, and jazz. He had countless stories of seeing
the biggest names in clubs and restaurants and chatting with them. Chet Baker,
Miles Davis, Monk, buying Ella a drink at the bar, hanging with Bobby Darin at
a bar, being the only patron at a Rosemary Clooney gig where she insisted on
performing even though Dad told her she didn't have to do a show just for him.
Dad passed away two years ago but he left me his love of Frank and every time I
listen to Frank he's with me.
