note: Although Paramount Video taped "Concert For The Americas" on
8-20-82, the pay-TV showings were not aired until early
November. Seven pay services, around the country, offered it
to their member- ship. STAR TV had its premiere of the show
on 11/7/82 in the Boston. area. It aired on SHOWTIME, in
many areas of the country, beginning on 11/11. It would be
offered throughout the month by the seven services. While in
Althos de Chavon, Frank agreed to be interviewed by organ-
izations covering the inaugural event at the 5,000 seat amphitheater.
Frank was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying "Commercial
TV is in the doldrums, and pay TV can seize the moment to present
programming that will raise the level of entertainment for
both the performer and the consumer. Care and creativity can
turn the cable consumer on just like the lack of it has
turned off the regular TV watcher." The article was
published on 8/25. It also quoted Frank envisioning a time
when he would do monthly TV shows with guests like Lena
Horne, Fred Astaire, John Travolta and Leontyne Price.
Variety referred to the performance as an "explosion" and stated,
"Sinatra had rarely been better. Frank was in great form and in
excellent humor, and he communicated this feeling to the
audience." The Hollywood Reporter called it "one of a kind . .
. When he came out to sing, the force of the cheering seemed
to momentarily surprise even Sinatra . . . He kicked up his
musical heels and flexed his vocal muscles --- the crowd
loved every minute of it." Ed
