Re Vaughn's post of a few days ago about making lead sheets from scores,
Here's what I've been doing recently to make a cue line to add to parts, and I
was planning to use this same approach for my next project to make lead sheets.
In my score, I add an instrument of a non-specific treble clef line as a cue
line. I've been placing this cue line next to bottom in the score above the
bass, but that might not be the best place for it.
Then I can go through the piece and say the violin has the most important part
from bars 1 to 12, I go to the violin line and select those 12 bars, then go
down to the cue line I created and paste it in there, adding some text above
bar 1 of the cue line saying Violin. I go next to some group of bars beginning
with bar 13, go up in the score to whatever the principal instrument is there
and copy some more notes, go back down to the cue line at bar 13 and paste in
there. Gradually I work my way through the score from bar 1 to the last bar
that way.
If I'm really on my game, I can even copy and paste into the cue line as I am
initially composing the score instead of doing it all at the end.
This method seems to be pretty time-efficient for me. For example, I did a
project recently with an orchestra of 12 instruments and 4 Middle Eastern
percussion instruments, and I created parts for the percussion ists with their
part on one line and the cue line as a second line. To do this I created a new
part and chose from the list of staves the percussion line and the cue line
from the instrument list.
As I define a lead sheet for jazz, pop music etc. as a simple one staff line
piece of sheet music with whatever's the melody at that moment displayed (with
chord symbols above staff , lyrics if singer doing anything at that moment
below staff), a lead sheet really is the same idea as a cue line in classical
orchestra parts, if you think about it.

Hi Listers,
I am wanting to transfer a score into a leadsheet to help reduce the
number of pages. Is this possible? Or do I have to rewrite everything
out again using the leadsheet template.
Thank you,
Vaughn
