Here's the deal. You can't have vibrato on an open string. That may be why someone in your class said that you should tell the player to play the vibrato on a closed string. However, the player is going to know that without being told. So ignore the idea of a closed string. The person who said "closed string" may have meant "stopped string" which means that the players left hand is holding down the string so that it plays the note desired. That's called a "stopped string." Again, the player is going to know that without being told.
