Here's the deal. You can't have vibrato on an open string. That may be why
someone in your class said that you should tell the player to play the
vibrato on a closed string. However, the player is going to know that
without being told. So ignore the idea of a closed string. The person who
said "closed string" may have meant "stopped string" which means that the
players left hand is holding down the string so that it plays the note
desired. That's called a "stopped string." Again, the player is going to
know that without being told.

No closed string in music, may be another name.
