Kevin, Some more: Read offers some variants: an x on the stem, a cross outside the staff (like an articulation), etc. As for hitting the body of an instrument, you could use a 1-line staff with an x-notehead. If you needed to hit different parts of the instrument, you would have to designate some type of notation system, perhaps a staff with each line accounting for the different areas, etc. If the needs are simpler, a text annotation could work "Slap left side of the piano", etc. There aren't really set standards for all of this, so it's always good to make something as logical and simple as can be (though sometimes that's no easy feat!).
