Navaram, there are a number of different methods.  Which is appropriate 
depends on what you are trying to pass and inhibit:

* Voltage range
* Current range
* Frequency range
* AC coupled / DC coupled
* Maximum insertion loss switch ON
* Minimum insertion loss switch OFF
* Tolerable impedance range / variation switch ON
* Tolerable phase distortion switch ON
* Cost limits
* Real-estate limits

I suggest you get a book on analog design, or pour over IC appnotes.  A 
simple method for audio frequency range is to: AC couple to a Thevenin 
bias and shunt that with an NMOS FET.  The total parts cost for that can 
be as low as about $0.04.
