Ian, of course the answer is alternative #3, short track with one via straight down by rerouting the conflicting signal track on the inner layer. A poor attachment to a decoupling capacitor can really undermine the capacitor's effectiveness, making necessary even more capacitors and more vias. If your layout is already tight, that can make for a difficult situation. Basically, add up the inductances. In simplistic terms, the variable inductance will be the sum of the track lengths. But, tracks closer to the ground plane will exhibit less effects than tracks on layers further out. Regards, Steve.
