Thanks for the reply Hitesh.

Are there any guidelines based on plastic material to understand the severity
of this? Or any simple matrix to relate amount of charge to plastic material
properties or dimensions?

Vinod,

The discharge can jump from the plastic switch body to internal circuitry with
conducting paths.

The path thru the switch body might be the path of least resistance.

We had a Brother copier breaking frequently, all we touched was the key pad to
copy or fax.

I have a simple, maybe even silly, doubt here.
In mobile devices and tablets, we have user switches for power ON/OFF and
volume control which generally have plastic caps on top of switches.
Do we still need ESD diodes for these switches?
I have seen some people recommending and using them but not able to
comprehend the logic here as there is no discharge path from human body to
internal circuitry or at least there is no obvious discharge path that I
could find.

Thanks,
Vinod
