GND and VSS are not always used for a dual-referenced structure, such as ports
in a package. In fact, one might have two ports for one node to make the
process work correctly. One referenced to GND, the other referenced to VDD. Or
one might have two ports references to GND1 and GND2, where these are "pins" on
either side of a terminal, or even the planes above and below the a trace.
If you want to fully model all signal and power/ground paths in a design, it is
essential to introduce an additional reference for measurements, which may, in
fact, be artificial.
