Hello Raghav,
depending on the amplifier design just changing the gain setting may indeed
not directly affect the power consumption by a measurable amount. What may
change is the power consumption when actually driving a load attached to
the amplifier output - different output signals (higher/lower amplitude, or
higher/lower pre-emphasis resulting in different amount of peaking) will
result in different amount of power dissipated in the load. This power must
come from somewhere - the amplifier's power supply.
In other words, as long as the amplifier is not driving a load (or only a
high-impedance load like an oscilloscope probe), you may not see any effect
of the gain setting on the power consumption.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Kind regards

Subject: [SI-LIST] Power consumption of an amplifier
Sent by: si-list-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi Folks
I want to test the power consumption of a chip on an EVAL board provided
with equalizer gain settings which can be varied. This chip is basically an
amplifier.
I could drive the power supply as specified in the data sheet to 3.3V I
have gain settings to talk to the chip. But feeding a higher gain did not
affect the current drawn. Any suggestions to measure power consumption?
The assumption here is the chip on the EVAL board consumes most of the
power.
Thanks
Raghav
