It is meant to provide safety. Any of our 485 products may be used with a galvanic isolation device such as the NVE Corporation's IL485 (www.nve.com), but I believe the usual telecom application usually employs RS-232 devices such as our MAX232. RS-485 would be much better however -- much less radiated emissions.
