[ SHOWGSD-L ] who didn't elect whom?

I have just a couple of comments to make here...one is that the
members of the GSDCA did not vote in this election. The votes were cast
by the Delegate Body, and they, for the most part, were voting as they
were directed by the clubs they represent. Most Delegates consult with
their clubs as to what to do regarding certain issues, and I know for a
fact that many people, including Delegates, were annoyed beyond all
reason when our Delegate sat and apparently enjoyed sitting with Andrew
Hunte at last year's Eukanuba show. When that appeared on television,
people everywhere were complaining about an AKC Director "making nice"
with a man many have called "the devil incarnate."
When that happened, we were told that it was just "the luck of the
draw," and that someone's empty seat just happened to be beside Carmen.
All well and good...but at the same time, Patty Strand, who was seated
directly behind Carmen, got up and left when Hunte arrived. Her
comment, and I am told it was not made quietly, was that she would not
remain anywhere "that man." There is a person with strong convictions.
It is because of things like that that the Delegates voted
against Carmen, not because of anything the GSDCA or its members did.
Yes, those of us with friends in other breeds, especially those who pay
attention to what is going on in the dog world, were subject to
questions and interrogations about Hunte getting into the club. Yes,
people throughout dogdom knew about it, and no, nobody liked it. Many
also had heard, from whatever source, about the letter to the AKC that
was NOT signed by Lew.
There again, maybe that whole situation is just the way it has
been handled in the past...but again, now we have to add Hunte to the
picture. The matter of Andrew Hunte and his membership has tainted
everything the GSDCA has done for the past few weeks. It turned members
into sparring partners, and resulted in namecalling and threats, altho
one must remember that the initial threats were to Board Members, made
by one of their own.
The GSD fancy cannot ignore that it is only part of the dog
world. We may not care about the rest of the dog world, but they know
we are here and they will not forget us...this is the club that let
Hunte in. OK, we've corrected that mistake. Our Delegate tried to
prevent the correction, too. Don't forget that.
When push comes to shove, the only person to blame for Carmen's not
being chosen by the nominating committee to run for the board of the AKC
is the same person who is responsible for his failure to win election in
his bid from the floor. That person is Carmen himself. He may not
have alienated those who seek political influence, and he may not have
alienated his personal friends, but he certainly estranged himself from
his delegate peers. The only reason two candidates got fewer votes is
that they are not well-known.
Whatever anyone feels about Carmen as a friend, or whatever he has
done in the past for the club or for the breed, he'll have a long row to
hoe to get people past his determination to have the GSD fancy accept
Andrew Hunte as a peer.
There are other times our Delegate has blotted his copybook...his
bad advice to the bench show committee at the Daytona National cost the
club $2500. Better to just stop now and move on from here. If he finds
another club to nominate him, more power to them all. This club needs a
representative who will truly represent the club.
