When you judge many breeds all over the country you soon learn that you are
judging dogs not points. A judge who asks a steward about the points can be
turned into the AKC. A steward likewise. Best of Winners means just that,
Best of winners not who can pick up the lopsided major. This topic
shouldn't be discussed. Kathleen Steen

That was my first question when this discussion came up: How does the judge
know the points? Is it common knowledge or is it something that is not
typically privy to a judge? And if it is not something they SHOULD know, then
how
do they know?
Just a curious newbie, don't shoot me!

Oh for goodness sakes, they look at the judging program, which they receive
and which are also available at the AB shows at the super's desk. They
commonly comment "I have "x" majors", which is a feather in their cap or not
as
the case may be, because if they weren't somewhat respected, why would they
pull an entry at all? So they know what is a major going in and what is a
major
on one side only and how many specials they pulled.... Now, what they do
with it is another matter. I've seen and heard judges discuss dumping
specials
just to hold points for the class dog. (No, they'll never get an entry from
me again! and I think that is one heck of a bad rule the AKC has to count
Specials in class totals, but that's JMO). I had a judge tell me, after going
WD, "I wanted to give you the Breed, but then the bitch wouldn't have a
major". It's COMMON, when you go up on one side for a major and the other
side is
a little short not to "try" real hard w/ the dog that won the major so the
other has a better shot, and the handlers know and communicate this. It's
common as well for the crowd to "get behind" the one that needs BOW for the
major too, telegraphing to the judge. Actually, it's considered being a good
sport more often than not. Those competitors also got up at 3AM too and who
knows when the shoe is other foot, and it's hard enough to find majors....

Now, I suppose there will be a hundred posts saying "oh no", "doesn't
happen". Uh-Huh....
