Anne, I wouldn't fool with it, but that's just me. I neutered my CH Cody
and had him laporoscopically tacked while he was under for being neutered just
short of his 9th b-day. I didn't even have a cancer diagnosis, but one
testicle was firmer than the other and I was either going to have to deal w/
prostrate trouble or cancer, and I wasn't willing to fool w/ either. He
sailed
through the neutering and tacking but of all things, his throat was sore from
the (anesthesia) tube and he wasn't willing to eat right away. He couldn't
take his meds on an empty stomach, or he'd probably throw up, and I can just
imagine how excruciating that would be after a tummy tack, he didn't want ice
cream (!!!), and finally I thought to give him some white bread w/ peach jam
(he has a sweet tooth!).
I too knew that testicular cancer in dogs was slow to metastasize, but I
just wasn't willing to take the risk. (I had the option of sending his
testicles off to the University of Colorado, but didn't bother.) If it WAS
cancer,
we got it.
If your boy is an important part of your breeding program you can always try
to collect and freeze his sperm, but even so, the odds of getting a quality
collection w/ cancer are pretty slim.
