Most quakes shake or roll -- they don't open up and swallow you.
You prepare for quakes the same way you would prepare for any disaster. Have
food, medical supplies, water, etc on hand to last at least 72 hours - and do
not forget the animals' water.
But there are also structural things you need to do - anchor the water
heater, tall bookcases, any heavy item that is elevated to the wall. And make
sure there are anchor plates anchoring the house to the foundation. Having a
house built on firm ground is good - fill can turn very unstable. Know how to
turn off gas and power. If you have a well, see about getting a manual pump. A
generator is good.
Mostly, be sensible. But everyone should be able to be self supporting for 3
days regardless of the area you live in. Every place can get some natural
disaster or another. Good thing about quakes is that they are short - you can
get on with what needs to be done in just a matter of seconds - certainly no
longer than a couple of minutes.
Now how about a volcano erupting in your neighborhood???
