They most certainly did!
In fact, ALL of the Spaniels were one breed (or "type" if
you like) of dog at one time in their history -- very
early on in this country. The American Spaniel Club is, in
fact, OLDER than the AKC. And, at one time, it was the
Parent Club for all of the spaniel breeds. The difference
between the Cocker and the Fieldie at one time was a top
weight limit of 28 lbs, for example! So the Cocker and the
=46ield Spaniel also were one breed once upon a time.

I have no wish to fight. I just find it hilarious that
some people think a new breed HAS to be created by mixing
one breed with another. That's just not true. In this
country, breeds can split from other breeds for good
reason if the Parent Club petitions AKC. It's been done
many times before, and I've no doubt it will be done
again. FYI: Keep your eye on the Akita folks!
