I agree--it's one thing to act as a friendly stranger, put the hand out for the dog to sniff and/or pet the dog while talking to it in a friendly voice (or not at all). It's another thing entirely to act either threatening or suspicious. My dogs are all very friendly, but I do Schutzhund training with them as well. If they see someone acting threatening OR suspicious, by their training they will (very properly) alert on the person, bark, and/or begin lunging. In a true AKC Temperment Test there is a place on the entry form to indicate ahead of time if your dog has had Schutzhund training, and they take that into account in grading the 'surprise' section of the test. For a trained dog it is NOT wrong to act aggressively towards the stranger. But in the show ring I'd probably be excused and it would NOT be the dog's fault. The dog's know the difference. You can even body thump my dogs as long as you're being friendly! Cynthia Binder ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2004.
