One summer, many years ago, I worked for AT&T as a long-lines (overseas) operator -- I don't think it was possible to dial direct then... and every day there'd be lots of famous people making calls. We operators sat in two long rows, back to back. Whenever anyone got a famous person on line, she'd hold up a card with the name on it, and anyone who was interested would plug in to listen. HAHA...some of those poor people must have had really poor reception...........and some of those calls were filthy, too, ha ha. Of course those were the ones we listened to...if they were strictly business, nobody wanted to eavesdrop. I can tell you...Alfred Hitchcock sounded exactly the way he did on TV............and Sinatra was rude to an operator once, so she made out she didn't know who he was...made him spell his name and everything........he was livid!!! The Argentinian operators were awful, I remember...but the Brits were great...when things were slow, they'd plug us in to the BBC..... and there were a couple of the British operators who would let us know when they had famous people on the line, too, so we could listen in...... As for famous, I know Jimmy, too, and I knew Lamar!!!!!! Peggy ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2007.
