Staffordshire Bull Terriers were never the same breed as AmStaffs. Staffords are an old UK breed (can't recall the foundations now, but I could find them). Today, in fact, the breed composes one of the largest entries at shows...entries there are often near 300 dogs. When they came to the US, some wanted a leggier dog, and developed the American Pit Bull Terrier. This was, note, from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. From the APBT came the AmStaff. All three breeds are related, of course. You might call them "cousins." AmStaff's were the first to register with the AKC, and they used the name "Staffordshire Terrier." When the Staffordshire Bull Terrier wanted to be recognized by the AKC, the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America was asked if it would change its name and the name of their breed to the American Staffordshire Terrier, to avoid confusion. To this day, the parent club for the AmStaff is the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America--the original name. The parent club for the Stafford is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of America. And now you know the rest of the story. Peggy ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2005.
