I have been training dogs for many years.  I agree with the other posts.  The
MOST efficient way to house train a puppy (or dog) is to put them on a schedule
and crate train them.  The best explanation of this and generally enjoying
your new family addition can be found in an easy to read book by Carol Lea
Benjamin called Mother Knows Best.
Contrary to some beliefs....crates are not "doggy jail" when used properly.
They create a SAFE den-like environment for your dog.  P.S.  It will also
take care of the dangerous "electrical cord chewers."

Positive reinforcement, lots of praise, and preventing unwanted behaviors
before they occur is the goal.  Harmony .... Happy Humans .... Happy Pups!

And let me add that those who think that they are "off the hook"
because they have show dogs, performance dogs, need to read what the
LAAS (Los Angeles Animal Services) Spay/Neuter Advisory Board sent in
their report to the City council with the suggestions that all the Dog
Registries aren't "good" for various reasons.  So, take off AKC and
other registries, the owner's dogs aren't exempt any longer.  Back to
EVERY dog has to be s/n in Los Angeles.

Then on to the State, and on to other states.

Buy a BillBoard, expose them!

http://exposeanimalrights.com/

And write, call/phone/email... write comments to the newspapers, talk
to your club members, your friends, your elevator acquaintances!

It is terribly hard to be writing once again about a good friend, gone too
soon having fought an incredible battle with a mercyless disease.  In ways
Laurie was very open about her cancer and in others she was very private.
There were a couple of times when she was in the hospital and she would only
let a few people know.  When she went to the Mid Alantic futurity it was to
say good bye to long time friends and family.  She wrote me an email on the
way and said, "I have no business doing this" having just had cemo
treatment.  But she really knew that she did need to do this.  It was her
way.
I will remember Laurie and the many great times we had.  I will remember how
much she loved her dogs.  I will also remember her work to help others.  She
was so grateful to be voted to the Board and so upset that she didn't feel
good or have more time to be an advocate for the German Shepherd Dog and the
people who love them.  She was also very thankful for having the opportunity
to judge the futurity, another item on her "bucket list".
To Laurie's family, friends, and especially Ariel, we have lost a special
person... my heart hurts for you.
To my friend, so long for now, I love you and will miss you dearly...
Terry

From: showgsd <showgsd@xxxxxxx>

I am curious as to what brands of Glucosamine, MSM & Chondroitin supplements,
listers have found best.  I have all my dogs on these supplements along with
others, as they are very physically active either with jumping exercises in
obedience and rally and or herding.  I have used  either K-9  Liquid Health
Arthritis & Joint Formula or SyoviG3 soft chews.  These dogs are all OFA hips
and elbows and I just use it as a preventative as they are so active.  Also,
if you used this type of supplementation, at what age do you start?

We have had such a wet spring that I have had mushrooms pop up in my yard.  I
remember something on the list about them being poisonous to dogs, especially
puppies - I asked my vet if we have any poisonous ones that grow around here
and she said she had no idea.  I pulled up all that I could find - is there
some type of fungicide or way to kill them so they don't come back without
whatever I use being harmful to the puppies?  Thanks!!

ok, I gave these a go with our dachsie puppies.. I taped them down at one
end of the whelping area (you can imagine shavings with short legged puppies
was problematic).
they took to using them immediately - maybe there is a smell that attracts
them?
anyway, I left them for a couple of hours only.. came back to find the pads
shredded all over the whelping area..
back to the drawing board..

Kay,
That is a good question.? I have found that even my OFA Good dogs will slow
down and get gimpy as they age.? Don't we all?, LOL!? I use the K-9 Liquid
Health and start at about age 5 or 6, depending on the activity level.? Dogs
that are doing herding or jumping activities start earlier.??It has been proven
that liquids are far more absorbable in dogs that pills or powders.? This is
why I use the liquid health.? I have a?9 yr old and an 10 yr old here that
still act like puppies when they play and work.??If they do play too hard and
get sore, they recover quickly?because they?have NO arthritis.? I do believe in
prevention and think this regimine has helped prevent chronic problems.? I am
open to other suggestions as well so hope folks will post to the?List what
they?supplement.
Laura?
