I should have mentioned the adult onset as well. The hereditary condition
in puppies that is identified at weaning is what I was making reference to
as being autosomal recessive inheritance. It is thought that there is an
incomplete nerve development in the esophagus that controls the movement of
food down the esophagus (peristalsis) in this inherited condition of
puppies. There is also a condition that develops in the older dog that is also
termed megaesopagus, which is secondary to thyroid etc as Zoe said below.

Subject: Megaesophagus

Megaesophagus is a condition in humans, cats and dogs where peristalsis
fails to occur properly and the esophagus is enlarged.

Megaesophagus can occur at any age as a puppy, or as an older dog. If it
afflicts a puppy, the cause is usually genetic, or can be due to a
surgically repairable condition called PRAA (Persistant Right Aortic Arch). If
not
secondary to another disorder in adult animals, it is called "idiopathic"
(cause unknown). Megaesophagus can be secondary to other diseases such as
Myasthenia Gravis, Thyroid, Addisons and other Neurological disorders.
