I have been with my vet for decades. When I have a bitch ready to whelp he
always gives me one shot to take home. Whenever I think I need it during
whelping he wants for me to call him, no matter what time of day or night,
and tell him why I think I need it now. Then he either gives me the ok or
tells me to wait a little while. This works well for me and I know I won't
give her the shot prematurely.
A list of must-haves would really be wonderful, even for an oldie like me,
but certainly for our newbies.

  Just a thought I would like to pass on:     Pit  can be very dangerous to 
the health of the bitch and her whelps if one attempts using 'pit' shots to 
contract the Uterus, without having a lot of experience with whelping ... So I 
would just like to suggest to  new people to the breed who are  viewing these  
posts  on  the use of pit shots...please do not attempt ,  if you are not 
absolutely confident in your experience and knowledge of when to give it and 
when 
to refrain from using it.
Like any other Medication , it can be fatal in certain circumstances.. 
 When I  was  actively breeding Shepherds, I  also gave my females a 
clean-out shot..But I was familair with palpating them  and had worked as a Vet 
Assistant for 6 years... so I understood exactly what Pit does and the 
Dangerous  
affects it can have when used 
by someone who isn't experienced... So ,Please proceed with caution ...JMO
